Beyond Digital Photography

Welcome to the Beyond Digital Photography companion website! Here you will find the files we used to create the artwork in each exercise, or in some cases, very similar images. We've also included several brushes and two partial projects in PDF format for your evaluation.

We wrote Beyond Digital Photography for the photographers and artists who attended our classes and at conferences over the years asked for this book. Some students came from a conventional drawing and painting background and desired to make the transition from traditional to digital tools. Others had no experience with drawing and painting, but wanted to learn the principles of good composition, color theory and art history, as well as to gain practice with digital painting. Some artists wanted to combine their art with photography. Still others came from a business perspective and were looking to combine photographs with painting and other digital effects and develop new ways to enhance their art or photography business.

Beyond Digital Photography is an expressive journey that involves combining photography with drawing and painting. It is not a quick trick book, but a book where the authors take the reader by the hand and demonstrate the creative process in a conversational manner.Beyond Digital Photography offers inspiration and exciting creative techniques,and ideas for creative expression that cannot found elsewhere.

Beyond Digital Photography is written for professional photographers, commercial illustrators and artists of all levels.

May I use my own photographs?

We hope you do! Beyond Digital Photography wasn't written with the idea of having everyone produce identical works or styles, but instead to provide tools which can be adapted by each individual to create unique works of art. We firmly believe you are best served by following along with each exercise while you work with your own photographs. (It is recommended you choose images that share similarities with the pictures in the exercises only because it makes it easier to follow along, but it is certainly not critical for successful results.)

What brushes will I need to download?

Not a one. Every project was carefully written to use only what came with Adobe Photoshop© and Corel Painter©. We have provided several brushes as a gift for purchasing Beyond Digital Publishing, but none of them are required in any project. Our decision to use standard brushes is based on the philosophy that teaching readers how to manipulate standard brushes to create new custom brushes is far more valuable to them. If you know how to do it yourself you will never lack the exact brush you'd like!
